The Elevator Pitch

Confession: we have nothing whatsoever to do with the actual manufacturing of gates. Or latches either, for that matter. We’re a full-service, international communications company that makes considered purchases worth considering.

We offer everything from Creative, Strategy and Media, to CRM, Digital and Social, in four offices around the world. Making us the perfect fit for smaller global clients that routinely get lost in the mega-international network shuffle.

And speaking of publicly held conglomerates, no thanks. We’re happy to be a part of the privately held, employee-owned MSQ Partners, LTD.

Our Culture

And now a few words about one of our favorite subjects: us. Here at The Gate, we’ve worked hard to create an environment where everyone feels comfortable contributing to an idea. We know the importance of “pride in contribution” over “pride of authorship.” That differing points of view should not only be tolerated, but encouraged. And finally, that it pays to get here early on free bagel Fridays. But enough talk about us. Feel free to look at some pictures of us.
See us on InstagramSee us on Instagram

People. Yes, we have people.

Yes, we have people. Lots of them. All great at what they do. We also have a “no jerk” policy here at The Gate. We don’t believe in putting up with prima donnas just because they’re talented. Instead, we believe people can be smart, creative and fun to work with all at the same time. That said, come meet some of these magical creatures.

According to gypsy lore, Beau’s first spoken word was “Why?” followed closely by “Huh?” These inquisitive first words foreshadowed Beau’s career in advertising. Today, he searches for the inherent truth buried in every client product or service which makes it appealing to a large group of profitable perfect customers.

Beau started his career in the mailroom. Well … that’s not entirely true. But he did have to walk past the mailroom every day to reach his cubicle. In fact, he spent the first 12 years of his career sitting near the mailroom but in ever-larger cubicles and, later, offices while working at Dancer Fitzgerald Sample, which became Saatchi & Saatchi. After 18 years, he left to become President of Pagano Schenck & Kay, followed by co-founder and Managing Director of MindFull and, later Managing Director of Korey Kay & Partners.

Since 2005, Beau has been President of The Gate/New York, running the business and overseeing both the account and strategy departments. In this later capacity, Beau is responsible for conceiving or writing most of our clients brand propositions or positioning statements. In addition to running the New York office, Beau sits on the U.S. and International Boards of Directors.

He also sits on the industry self-policing board, the NARB; the National Advertising Review Board.

When Beau is not sitting, he’s speaking, frequently, at marketing and advertising conferences. To our astonishment, he has been asked back for an encore presentation by all of them.

Finally, Beau is co-author along with fellow Gater David Bernstein of Death to All Sacred Cows, published by Hyperion Books, a division of Disney. Death to All Sacred Cows has been translated into eight languages. Go figure.

Born in Goteborg, Sweden, raised in Manhattan, schooled in the Midwest (Lake Forest College), and currently a native of New York City, Beau spends his weekends restoring an 1840s-era farmhouse.

David is the Chief Creative Officer of The Gate/New York and sits (because it’s exhausting to stand) on both the U.S. and International Board of Directors.

During his tenure at the agency, David has won over 50 industry awards and, through an odd twist of fate, co-wrote a best-selling business book.

A print ad he, Beau Fraser and Bill Schwab created for the agency caught the eye of the editor-in-chief at Disney’s Hyperion Books and resulted in Death to all Sacred Cows. So far, the book has been translated into eight languages. Nine, if you count the proofreader who helped us with our English.

Prior to joining The Gate, David worked at creative hot-shops such as Ammirati & Puris, Angotti Thomas Hedge and Merkley Newman Harty.

His work has made multiple appearances in the One Show, Clios and Graphis. But the only thing his mother brags about is that one of his Hallmark commercials is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.

The irony is, neither he nor his mother has ever gone to see it.

Eric’s passion for all things media is based on his desire to know “what works” – plus, he can’t write or draw to save his life, with the exception of “Hangman.”

For over 15 years, he’s gotten the kind of measurable results that have wowed big-ticket advertisers like American Express, Godiva and Con Edison.

He joined The Gate/New York from Margeotes/Fertitta + Partners, where he started one of the first full-service interactive media groups in the advertising business. Among his more visible successes was the launch of About.com, which closely integrated Internet and traditional media channels — a novel program prior to 1998.

While managing the agency’s key accounts with his media team, Eric is also evolving the agency’s media practice with an eye toward the next 10 years as we push into a data-driven, device-centric, interactive world of communications.

Eric lives in Connecticut with his wife and their two sons, where he spends his time planning weekend sports schedules and negotiating use of the TV remote control.

Awilda has always had a knack for numbers.

She learned to count to one hundred at age 2. She mastered algebra at age 10. And when she was 13 years old, she created her first budget. Based on a year of babysitting money, she was able to save up for a new bicycle and, best of all, negotiate a discount on a second bicycle for her brother.

That’s when she realized she had a knack for marketing, too.

For almost two decades, this love of marketing and numbers has given her a wonderful career — most recently as CFO at CMG Communications and The Vox Collective.

Born and raised in New York City, Awilda now makes her home in New Jersey with her young son. She enjoys gardening, cooking and a holistic approach to health that she shares with her family, friends and any unsuspecting stranger she sees eating a Twinkie.

When did you start working at The Gate?
June 2015

What do you want to do when you retire?
I picture myself converting the detached garage in our backyard into an office and working with local clients on small projects. Working one on one with small businesses and people who are trying to get their passion out into the world seems very rewarding.

Name the first person you kissed (relatives not included)?
Her name was Tina. We hid where trash was collected in her apartment building. Even at that young age I knew how to be romantic and treat a girl right.

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
Neil Kellerhouse. Fortunately for him he’s alive. I recently realized Mr. Kellerhouse is behind every film poster that’s caught my attention in the last decade or so. I’ve seen his work for The Social Network copied over and over. I’d love to sit down and talk to him about his process.

What’s the best advice you ever got?
Be nice. No matter how good your work is no one likes working with a jerk.

Sitting in Eric’s office every single day.

Ranch dressing. I’m not sure if it’s actually considered a condiment, but where I’m from we put that on everything.

Move to Florida like most people from the Northeast do (I think it’s the law!) and root for the Yankees from afar.

What’s the best advice you ever got?
Joan Crawford warning against wire hangers in Mommie Dearest is good advice — every time I get clothing back from the dry cleaners, I take them off those horrible wire hangers!

What was your SAT score?
I will tell you this — my math score was significantly higher than my verbal score. Let’s just leave it at that.

Name of the first person you kissed (relatives not included)?
It was at Skateport during the Eastside-Westside skate session, while “Everything I Do, I Do It for You” by Bryan Adams (from the Robin Hood: Price of Thieves soundtrack) played and his parents filmed the infamous “kiss,” as it was his birthday. Thank you, Kevin B., for that indelible memory.

Who is your favorite superhero?
She-Ra — as a child I would loudly, proudly and frequently proclaim “I am She-Ra!” In close second is Wonder Woman but She-Ra will always be my Princess of Power.

Do you have any tattoos? If so, what are they?

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
Larry David. Just seems like he would be a really entertaining guest and Seinfeld is one of my all-time favorite shows.

What’s the best advice you ever got?
Before jumping to conclusions, take a second to pause and process.

Who is your favorite superhero?
Wonder Woman, obviously.

Do you have any tattoos? If so, what are they?
No tattoos. Afraid I would immediately change my mind.

When did you start working at The Gate?
March 2011.

What do you want to do when you retire?
Think Tony Stark, but teaching children. I love the idea of being an inventor holed up in their house creating new ideas; but I also want to teach and mentor troubled children who don’t have the joy of having parents. Only both of these would make me happy.

Name of first person you kissed (relatives not included)?
I consider my first cat a person, if that counts.

Who is your favorite superhero?
Batman. I like the thought of someone who has serious psychological issues, no actual super-powers, but with his own successes and genius, can be a hero. Yeah he’s super pessimistic. Yeah he has a very depressing back story. Yeah, he can sometimes be a jerk. But he reflects something in human consciousness that I feel can relate to anyone. The idea that everyone has their problems, but that doesn’t stop people from being “super.”

What do you want to do when you retire?
I want to retire in Vermont with my rabbit, Bjorn (who I am convinced will live forever). Hopefully I can spend my time gardening, cooking, and drinking wine; so much wine!

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
I would love to have an Alice in Wonderland garden party with Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Gary Ridgway, and Jim Jones. Arguably, this could either be the most insightful event in the world of psychology so long as no one “drinks the punch,” or it could go horribly wrong.

Who is your favorite superhero?
Being a superhero is overrated! I like vigilantes such as the Daredevil and Batman. They believe in due process and crime control, which is pretty amazing.

What’s your favorite ad of all time?
The ad for the Tontine Pillow ‘expiry date’ campaign. They provided a reason for people to purchase their products and keep purchasing their products for a category where people keep their pillows for years. It’s a brilliant way to boost sales and drive repeat purchase.
The TVC can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSxqYO9c22g

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
I’m inviting two guests…just to be greedy. Adele firstly. Also John Oliver.

What’s your favorite condiment and why?
Vegemite… Yep really! I love it and I’m not just saying that. Pick the Australian in the room.

Who is your favorite superhero?
Either Danger Mouse (it’s a childhood thing) or Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr… that’s the reason for that. Enough said.

I’ve worked and presided over our (and the industry’s) change from predominantly print to a predominantly digital focus in terms of the studio and the type of work we churn out on a daily basis. And lived to tell about it.

A tattoo? I barely have the nerve to wear a shirt that isn’t blue.
