When did you start working at The Gate?
      April 2008

What accomplishment are you most proud of at The Gate?
That I still maintain running my dance company and making art outside of my full-time job.

Name of the first person you kissed (relatives not included)?
Well, he kissed me. His name was Jaime and he took me by surprise with planting one on me while my eyes were closed for a game of Hide and Seek.

What’s your favorite condiment and why?
Butter because it’s butter and sometimes has another favorite condiment of mine wrapped up in it called salt.

      Piers Pollock

      THE GATELondon

Yes, it’s Pollock with a P. Piers Treherne Pollock to family and friends (but there’s not enough time or space to go in to that now). Piers is a blend of traditional academic and intellectual explorer; a voracious consumer of research and a free thinking libertarian.

Piers adds an intellectual bite to the agency. He is insightful, incisive, forthright and passionate. He has a wealth of experience that illuminates his vision. He spent several years working in Paris and although the possessor of a certain European urbanity he also talks to himself occasionally.

He constantly drives the agency to challenge itself and never to assume that what we think is right is right until we’ve proved it. Clients may love him or hate him (we love him) but they always value the clarity of thought that Piers brings to any challenge.

When did you start working at The Gate?
      July 1997

What accomplishment are you most proud of at The Gate?
I’ve worked and presided over our (and the industry’s) change from predominantly print to a predominantly digital focus in terms of the studio and the type of work we churn out on a daily basis. And lived to tell about it.

What’s the best advice you ever got?
      Don’t eat yellow snow.

Do you have any tattoos? If so, what are they?
A tattoo? I barely have the nerve to wear a shirt that isn’t blue.

What is a typical day like in The Gate office?
      I sleep a lot.

Whose desk do you sit under most often?
It varies. But whichever desk has the most crumbs.

Any advice for other office dogs?
If it doesn’t smell right, don’t eat it.

What’s your favorite ad of all time?
The ad for the Tontine Pillow ‘expiry date’ campaign. They provided a reason for people to purchase their products and keep purchasing their products for a category where people keep their pillows for years. It’s a brilliant way to boost sales and drive repeat purchase.
The TVC can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSxqYO9c22g

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
I’m inviting two guests…just to be greedy. Adele firstly. Also John Oliver.

What’s your favorite condiment and why?
Vegemite… Yep really! I love it and I’m not just saying that. Pick the Australian in the room.

      Who is your favorite superhero?
Either Danger Mouse (it’s a childhood thing) or Iron Man. Robert Downey Jr… that’s the reason for that. Enough said.

He joined The Gate/New York from Margeotes/Fertitta + Partners, where he started one of the first full-service interactive media groups in the advertising business. Among his more visible successes was the launch of About.com, which closely integrated Internet and traditional media channels — a novel program prior to 1998.

While managing the agency’s key accounts with his media team, Eric is also evolving the agency’s media practice with an eye toward the next 10 years as we push into a data-driven, device-centric, interactive world of communications.

      Matt Leach

      THE GATELondon

Matt is uniquely placed to help us deliver on our vision of what a modern full service agency ought to be.

His fascination with what makes people tick, nurtured at The Manchester Grammar School and then in a triple honours degree at Edinburgh University, was commercially honed at his time on the publishing side of the media business, at The Financial Times Group and The Guardian and Observer Newspapers.

Working with several leading agencies, it was clear to Matt that many solely focussed on audience composition and trading.

In a fascinating, kaleidoscopic media landscape that offers brands so many opportunities to interrupt, to debate, to entertain, and to guide their audiences there’s so much more to media planning than indices and a cheap deal.

In his nine years at The Gate, Matt has effectively fused brand strategy with touchpoint planning and content delivery, demonstrably improving the bottom line for our key charity, finance, and retail clients.

That’s of course when he’s not doing himself serious harm on a mountain bike near his home in the Chilterns.

      Alistair Ross

      THE GATELondon

Alistair has a proven track record of delivering innovative and imaginative creative ideas. Over the past fifteen years he has written, art directed, illustrated and directed award-winning advertising campaigns; as well as collaborated on experiential events and product design.

Alistair has been awarded almost equally for creativity and effectiveness. Unsurprising, as they are natural bedfellows. He remains hands on in the creative process on a daily basis, whilst instilling a sense of positive dissatisfaction into the creative department: good is the enemy of great.

He also believes in walking the walk. Whilst leading the creative on the British Army recruitment account, his commitment to filming the most truthful work took him across five continents, including to the front line in Afghanistan. This entrepreneurial approach to producing creative, resulted in six award-winning integrated campaigns, including a Grand Prix at the Campaign Digital Awards and a finalist in the Titanium category at Cannes.

Alistair brings a sense of creative fearlessness, whilst believing strongly that collaboration is the best way to achieve memorable results; a throwback from representing Great Britain at European and World Championship level in rowing. The greatest things happen when no one minds who takes the credit.

      Beau Fraser

      THE GATENew York

According to gypsy lore, Beau’s first spoken word was “Why?” followed closely by “Huh?” These inquisitive first words foreshadowed Beau’s career in advertising. Today, he searches for the inherent truth buried in every client product or service which makes it appealing to a large group of profitable perfect customers.

Beau started his career in the mailroom. Well … that’s not entirely true. But he did have to walk past the mailroom every day to reach his cubicle. In fact, he spent the first 12 years of his career sitting near the mailroom but in ever-larger cubicles and, later, offices while working at Dancer Fitzgerald Sample, which became Saatchi & Saatchi. After 18 years, he left to become President of Pagano Schenck & Kay, followed by co-founder and Managing Director of MindFull and, later Managing Director of Korey Kay & Partners.

Since 2005, Beau has been President of The Gate/New York, running the business and overseeing both the account and strategy departments. In this later capacity, Beau is responsible for conceiving or writing most of our clients brand propositions or positioning statements. In addition to running the New York office, Beau sits on the U.S. and International Boards of Directors.

He also sits on the industry self-policing board, the NARB; the National Advertising Review Board.

When Beau is not sitting, he’s speaking, frequently, at marketing and advertising conferences. To our astonishment, he has been asked back for an encore presentation by all of them.

Finally, Beau is co-author along with fellow Gater David Bernstein of Death to All Sacred Cows, published by Hyperion Books, a division of Disney. Death to All Sacred Cows has been translated into eight languages. Go figure.

Born in Goteborg, Sweden, raised in Manhattan, schooled in the Midwest (Lake Forest College), and currently a native of New York City, Beau spends his weekends restoring an 1840s-era farmhouse.

Mark was then approached to set up and run a studio for Dave Trott’s new agency WTCS. Here he worked on award winning campaigns for clients such as The COI as well as producing work for Subaru, Channel 5, The Independent and Ryvita as it rapidly grew from a start up to medium sized agency.

Next came Cagney and the chance to work on literally his biggest project to date, the complete rebranding of Caribbean Airlines with the re-liverying of its fleet of boeing 737s.

At The Gate Mark still enjoys the challenge of producing great design along with the day to day running of its creative services departments.

When he’s not working he can be found honing his skills on the agency football table or desperately trying not to injure himself whilst riding his skateboard.

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
Easy – singer/songwriter Carole King. An accidental channel change at the age of 10 exposed me to her concert and that was it. I was hooked.

What’s your favorite condiment and why?
Bacon. Does bacon count as a condiment? Probably not. Bacon bits is my favorite condiment.

Do you have any tattoos? If so, what are they?
I have seven tattoos and only regret one. That’s a pretty good percentage, I’d say.

During his tenure at the agency, David has won over 50 industry awards and, through an odd twist of fate, co-wrote a best-selling business book.

A print ad he, Beau Fraser and Bill Schwab created for the agency caught the eye of the editor-in-chief at Disney’s Hyperion Books and resulted in Death to all Sacred Cows. So far, the book has been translated into eight languages. Nine, if you count the proofreader who helped us with our English.

Prior to joining The Gate, David worked at creative hot-shops such as Ammirati & Puris, Angotti Thomas Hedge and Merkley Newman Harty.

His work has made multiple appearances in the One Show, Clios and Graphis. But the only thing his mother brags about is that one of his Hallmark commercials is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.

The irony is, neither he nor his mother has ever gone to see it.

When did you start working at The Gate?
      May 2015

What’s your favorite ad of all time?
Probably Newcastle Brown Ale’s “Independence Day Eve” campaign. I found their gentle ribbing of American patriotism at its highest to be fun and engaging.

Name of the first person you kissed (relatives not included)?
Do stuffed animals count? Then let’s skip this one.

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
If I could have a translator: My namesake, Alexander the Great. If I can’t have a translator: Neil Gaiman.

What’s the best advice you ever got?
Everyone probably gives some really sage wisdom here but mine is “Don’t touch that!” from my parents. I wouldn’t be alive without it.

      THE GATENew York

Awilda has always had a knack for numbers.

She learned to count to one hundred at age 2. She mastered algebra at age 10. And when she was 13 years old, she created her first budget. Based on a year of babysitting money, she was able to save up for a new bicycle and, best of all, negotiate a discount on a second bicycle for her brother.

That’s when she realized she had a knack for marketing, too.

For almost two decades, this love of marketing and numbers has given her a wonderful career — most recently as CFO at CMG Communications and The Vox Collective.

Born and raised in New York City, Awilda now makes her home in New Jersey with her young son. She enjoys gardening, cooking and a holistic approach to health that she shares with her family, friends and any unsuspecting stranger she sees eating a Twinkie.

When did you start working at The Gate?
      April 2016

What do you want to do when you retire?
I want to retire in Vermont with my rabbit, Bjorn (who I am convinced will live forever). Hopefully I can spend my time gardening, cooking, and drinking wine; so much wine!

If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?
I would love to have an Alice in Wonderland garden party with Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, Gary Ridgway, and Jim Jones. Arguably, this could either be the most insightful event in the world of psychology so long as no one “drinks the punch,” or it could go horribly wrong.

      Who is your favorite superhero?
Being a superhero is overrated! I like vigilantes such as the Daredevil and Batman. They believe in due process and crime control, which is pretty amazing.

When did you start working at The Gate?
      March 2011.

What do you want to do when you retire?
Think Tony Stark, but teaching children. I love the idea of being an inventor holed up in their house creating new ideas; but I also want to teach and mentor troubled children who don’t have the joy of having parents. Only both of these would make me happy.

Name of first person you kissed (relatives not included)?
I consider my first cat a person, if that counts.

      Who is your favorite superhero?
Batman. I like the thought of someone who has serious psychological issues, no actual super-powers, but with his own successes and genius, can be a hero. Yeah he’s super pessimistic. Yeah he has a very depressing back story. Yeah, he can sometimes be a jerk. But he reflects something in human consciousness that I feel can relate to anyone. The idea that everyone has their problems, but that doesn’t stop people from being “super.”

      June 2015

What do you want to do when you retire?
I picture myself converting the detached garage in our backyard into an office and working with local clients on small projects. Working one on one with small businesses and people who are trying to get their passion out into the world seems very rewarding.

Name the first person you kissed (relatives not included)?
Her name was Tina. We hid where trash was collected in her apartment building. Even at that young age I knew how to be romantic and treat a girl right.

Neil Kellerhouse. Fortunately for him he’s alive. I recently realized Mr. Kellerhouse is behind every film poster that’s caught my attention in the last decade or so. I’ve seen his work for The Social Network copied over and over. I’d love to sit down and talk to him about his process.

What’s the best advice you ever got?
Be nice. No matter how good your work is no one likes working with a jerk.

      CEO

      Luke Mugliston

      THE GATELondon

Luke has spent half of his career at big agencies and half as a senior client.

He joined The Gate from Aviva plc , where he was Global Brand Director responsible for brand strategy, marketing operations, and e-commerce.

This role included heading up the team that delivered what The Times subsequently referred to as “the slickest rebrand in corporate history”: Norwich Union to Aviva.

The follow-up campaign was the award-winning ‘You are the big picture’ internal and external work that Facebook referred to as a case study in social media best practice.

Prior to this, Luke had been Marketing Director for the investment giant, Fidelity, working across direct and intermediated channels.

It was Fidelity that lured him away from his role as Board Account Director at Publicis advertising agency, where he had been running the account domestically and internationally.

In his career to-date, Luke has worked on numerous accounts across a wide range of sectors: from luxury goods and cosmetics, to consumer electronics and charities, to professional services and FMCG, from start-ups to blue-chips.

In sport, Luke has represented Great Britain at European, Commonwealth and World Championships. He was educated at Westminster School and King’s College, London. He is also a founding trustee of the Oli Bennett Charitable Trust (www.olibennett.org.uk) – a charity that has been nurturing young entrepreneurs for over a decade.

When did you start working at The Gate?
      October 2011

What do you want to do when you retire?
Move to Florida like most people from the Northeast do (I think it’s the law!) and root for the Yankees from afar.

What’s the best advice you ever got?
Joan Crawford warning against wire hangers in Mommie Dearest is good advice — every time I get clothing back from the dry cleaners, I take them off those horrible wire hangers!

      What was your toughest assignment?
Proofreading articles written in a foreign language is always a little challenging.

      THE GATELondon

Christy never had to wonder why they call it ‘coming down’ from university, having spent all four years at Cambridge in an imaginary ivory tower he designed himself.

He worked initially for Hill & Knowlton, advising the new Czech government after the 1992 ‘velvet divorce’ from Slovakia. From there he joined Young & Rubicam Prague, and won the first ever Cannes Lion by a Central European Advertising Agency (and for a Colgate commercial too).

Moving back to the UK in 1995, he joined J. Walter Thompson and was made a board director 3 years later at the age of 28. During that time he won prizes for work on Unilever, Kraft, Barclays and Shell, whilst also acting as non-executive advisor to the Director of Communications, Royal Air Force, and scooping first prize in The Times’ National Sales & Marketing Challenge.

Christy moved to Abbott Mead Vickers/BBDO in 2000 to run the £120M BT Account, a task that drove him to the brink of madness and then did wheelies. It came as a relief when his insane babbling was one day mistaken for an aptitude for strategy and planning.

Runaway success soon followed, with his “Quote Me Happy” campaign propelling Norwich Union from 12th to 1st in the direct insurance market in 18 months (and earning him the undying hatred of a whole generation of daytime TV viewers), and Nuts magazine becoming the fastest growing and largest men’s magazine in history.

In 2007 Christy was asked to join Norwich Union to plan for its eventual transition to Aviva (‘the slickest corporate re-branding in history’ according to The Times) and ended up as Global Head of Marketing Strategy & Planning and, latterly, Internal Engagement Director.

Christy joined CEO Luke Mugliston at The Gate on April Fools’ Day 2012.

He is a direct descendant of seventeen English Kings & Queens and five foreign ones. He jumps out of ‘planes for a laugh, and lives in a house that he built himself, with wife Emma and two sons, both of whom have been given proper boy’s names – and are already a good deal less confused than their dad as a result.

      Never play cards with him.
